Escape routes from the city
Welcome
Barcelona’s architectural distinction was further cemented athis month with confirmation that it is to be the UNESCO-UIA World Capital of Architecture from 2026. The award highlights the key role of architecture, city planning and culture in shaping urban identity and during Barcelona’s three year reign, it will host debates, lectures and workshops for both professionals and the public. Barcelona’s motto for their bid was “One today, one tomorrow,” a desire to explore sustainability and the future of the built environment. We’ll keep you informed on this exciting project.
Meanwhile, we focus this week on escape routes from the city, locations that provide a blast of fresher summer air for hiking or cycling in the Catalonian countryside. All of them are favourites with Antares’ residents.
Best wishes
The Antares team
Hike to the hills
Thirty minutes north of Barcelona, Tibidabo is the highest peak in the Collserola Natural Park. Make it to the top – or take the funicular and walk down – and you’re rewarded with wide city views. This is also the location of Europe’s oldest amusement park. A little further north, heavily protected Montseny National Park has a range of excellent trails. From Matagalls, the highest peak, on a clear day you’ll see from Montserrat to the Pyrenees.
Cycling escapes
Spain has always been a top destination for cyclists and Girona, 40 minutes by train from Barcelona, is home to more professional cyclists than anywhere worldwide. The surrounding Empordà region is a treat for keen amateurs too, a rich agricultural landscape of rolling green hills interspersed with medieval villages. Check out favourite routes on this cycling.
