Red passion
Recognisable for the bright red colour used on its top floors, a new skyscraper has appeared on the Barcelona skyline. A design by Odile Decq.
French architect Odile Decq has designed her first skyscraper. The Antares tower in Barcelona, which has 30 floors above ground, is a converted commercial building that was built at the start of Avinguda Diagonal, next to Enric Massip-Bosch’s Telefónica Diagonal ZeroZero Tower, but abandoned after the financial crisis of 2008.
The fluidly shaped building, inspired by Catalan modernism and the paintings of Joan Miró, contains 88 apartments of various sizes and has a roof terrace with a swimming pool overlooking the Mediterranean and the Montserrat, a spa and a gym.
The bright red colour used on the upper balconies makes the tower a distinctive feature of the city’s ever-changing skyline.
It’s one of my favourite colours. It represents passion. It’s life. I wanted the red on the top of the building to be like a flag signalling its presence and its identity.
